Dense Grade Base limestone gravel is a dense, angular, and compactible material that includes stone sizes from 2 inches down to fine dust, also known as “crusher run” or “baserock”. It is a durable and versatile product primarily used as a strong base for driveways, patios, foundations, and retaining walls to provide stability and excellent compaction.
Properties and composition
- Size range: Contains stone pieces from a maximum of 2 inches down to fine dust, which allows it to compact very well.
- Shape: Composed of angular, crushed stone, not smooth river rock.
- Composition: A mix of limestone rock and fine particles.
- Color: Typically a light gray or beige, which can complement various landscaping projects.
Uses and applications
- Base material: Ideal for creating a solid, stable foundation under driveways, parking lots, and RV pads.
- Foundations: Used as a backfill material in foundation projects and as a base for shed foundations.
- Structural support: Excellent for constructing retaining walls, reinforcing areas prone to erosion, and as a base for paver installations.
- Drainage: Can be used for drainage applications and French drains where a compactable base is needed.
- Fill material: Suitable for leveling uneven landscapes or filling low spots before other materials are applied.
Important considerations
- Compaction: Its high compaction makes it a stable and durable base layer, but the sharp edges can make it uncomfortable to walk on as a top layer.
- Not a top layer: Due to its jagged edges, it is best used as a base layer and not as the final walking surface.
